How often should I meet with my advisor?

The faculty in the Department of Chicano and Latino Studies believes that timely, consistent and competent advising is an essential component of a student’s success in college. We are committed to providing you with the guidance and information that you need to complete your program of study with us. You should expect to receive accurate information to your queries during the semester. If you have any concerns about the quality or timeliness of the advising you are receiving please do not hesitate to contact us.

We strongly encourage you to make an appointment with an advisor soon after you declare the major/minor. Our hope is that you will meet with your CALS advisor at least once a semester. Faculty advisors are required to hold at least three office hours a week during the semester; you are welcome to stop by at that time to speak with us regarding any questions or concerns you may have about your classes or your progress in the major. Please note that advisors are particularly busy during the week before registration. It is a good idea to make an appointment ahead of time.

What will happen at my advising appointment?

You may receive advising by dropping into office hours or making an appointment with your advisor. Even if you are coming to office hours it is a good idea to contact your advisor ahead of time so they can review your file before meeting with you. During your advising appointment, we will use an advising checklist to check on your progress toward graduation. We will also advise you on which classes you will need to take to stay on track. Finally, if you are close to being a senior (90 units) we will discuss the capstone requirement with you and fill out your graduation application.
